Zoning Technician

Position available immediately in the Community Development & Planning Department
Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Zoning Administrator, this position performs a variety of administrative duties requiring knowledge of the city zoning ordinance and state codes with regard to zoning administration, plan review, and permit issuance. Assists and educates the public on zoning ordinance and land use regulations; promotes positive public relations with the public, including homeowners, developers, architects, engineers and contractors; intakes and reviews permit applications and plans for acceptance; reads plats and plans using scale; computes permit fees; prepares and issues permits; performs database entry and administration; maintains, updates and researches database files; scans and inputs image files; prepares monthly reports; prepares property owner notifications; attends board and commission meetings and transcribes minutes from digital recordings; and performs other related duties as assigned. The selected candidate must be able to meet deadlines and perform a number of tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume office environment.
Requirements: Graduation from high school and three years of progressively responsible administrative/clerical experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must be able to learn job responsibilities quickly and apply accumulated knowledge; perform basic math calculations and make decisions in accordance with department procedures and regulations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; manage time wisely and maintain an organized work environment; and use tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with the public. Must possess a valid driverís license with a good driving record. Available to attend one evening meeting per month. Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Access.
Desirable Qualifications: Some college courses in urban planning/zoning, real estate development, public administration, or related field. Previous experience supporting the administration of zoning and subdivision ordinances or other development regulations in local government. Experience with geographic information systems (GIS), Laserfiche, and project tracking software. Proficiency in Spanish or other language is a plus.
Hours: Monday through Friday,8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening meetings as specified
Salary: $44,226 - $50,800 annually (Grade 112)
